We really enjoyed the opportunity to help assemble the practice field with McKinley HS. It gave us some great insight into the size of the field

Team Illusion had the immense privilege of being invited to help assemble the DC FIRST's Aerial Assist Field at McKinley High School. We brought 12 students and had many parents and college mentors there as well. There were three students from Team 1915 as well. We were able to lay the carpet and get the sides and basic ends completed. The High and Low Goals are to be made locally by a carpenter, and the center 5' Truss is set to come in later in the month. After assembling the field we were able to practice some of the concepts of the game by pretending to be robots and passing the ball from player to player. We had a lot of fun as well as gaining some insight into some of the intricacies of the game. Team Illusion 4464 attended the FRC FIRST 2014 Kick-Off at Wilson High School in Washington, DC. The new game for the year is called AERIAL ASSIST and involves a lot of team work as well a lot of typical robot activities like moving, lifting, throwing and catching a 2' wide ball. Don Brobst of FIRST headed the event and introduced many FIRST alumni and other amazing FIRST personnel.
After the Kick-Off at Woodrow Wilson High School in DC we went to the Schaeffers' house in Bowie. Each family brought a main dish and a dessert and we spent about 7 hours going through the rules of Aerial Assist in depth. We got through the algorithms to decide on our strategy and even got to the point of discussing the robot design a little bit. Each student was invited to contribute his/her ideas as we looked at the various possibilities for the robot. Some really fun moments were enjoyed by all as any and all ideas were thrown out for evaluation. |
